No matter what anyone tries to tell you, this record is not even close to being Motley Crue. Although the band name remains the same and they have even went so far as to Self-Titling their only full length sans rock god Vince Neil, this record is in no way shape nor form a Motley Crue record. Once you have dismissed that illusion from your consciousness, this is a pretty fair album. Slinky, slightly grungy and rocking with a vibe that's just this side of Aerosmith, 'Power To The Music' starts off well, but falls victim to a chorus that lies there flatly. Uninspiring chorus aside, this shows that Nikki, Tommy and Mick can get along fine without ol' Vince to kick around. It's just that they sound like a completely different band.

You've got to give it to John Corabi though. It must have been no small order to step into Neil's position and in doing so, the bluesy, sometimes gravel-throated screamer does a quite admirable job, particularly on the inventively rocking single cut 'Hooligan's Holiday' (containing a sliding, laid-back riff along the same lines City Boy Blues) and the tear-jerking, semi-acoustic, highly symphonic 'Misunderstood', which is the hands down highlight of the record. At this point in the band's career, the group appears to have become introverted, with Mick Mars seeming withdrawn and unhappy in the liner photos, particularly the one that showcases his mug atop a shapely nude woman's body. That might be an inside joke as Sixx was gravitating toward Lee in Neil's absence, but Mars' tasteful playing remains the best thing about this album.

That said, ain't nothin' like the real thing, baby.
