Pro-Pain is one of the bands that one would consider to be one of the originators of “metal-core”. These days the term “metalcore” is tacked onto just about every band that has a really long name and shouted/melodic vocals so it has somewhat lost it's meaning. Originally metalcore was a type of music that sounded like Metal and Hardcore Punk mixed together. In other words, bands like Black Flag and Bad Brains meets bands like Megadeth and Metallica. There was even a bit of funky hip-hop-ness to it. Bands like Suicidal Tendencies and Biohazard had this same kind of style along with Pro-Pain. The only band that is popular now days that remotely resembles this style is Hatebreed, and any other band dubbed “metalcore” is using the term in a completely different way than it was originally intended.

That being said, Pro-Pain has definitely not lost its edge after 15 years, in fact it has only sharpened it. Pro-Pain is back with ‘Age of Tyranny-The Tenth Crusade' yet another album of politically tinged shouted lyrics, classic guitar licks and heavy rhythm sections. Pro-Pain seems to grow with every effort, and though they stick to a basic style it doesn't get stale because the band continually reinterprets it. Where songs like ‘Foul Taste of Freedom' from the 1992 album of the same name had a bouncy, rap influenced hook to them, this new effort has songs like ‘The New reality' which has a slower tempo and slightly darker edge. It reminds me a bit of the Biohazard album ‘State of the World Address' because of its heavy, down tuned bass lines. Anyone who want to know how metalcore originally started out should definitely check out ‘Age of Tyranny-The Tenth Crusade'.
