Thrash metal is returning with a vengeance in 2005! The year has already seen several strong releases from important bands and the year is still very young. Over Kill are no exception as "Relixiv", the fourteenth issuance from these stalwart thrashers is their best effort in years by what is perhaps the deadliest incarnation of the quintet yet. Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth has a voice that is unmistakable and his voice is as strong as ever on this record. All of the elements inherent in the band's sound project like a bomb blast from songs like "Loaded Rack" and "Keeper", making for a manic assault of metal from a band that refuses to compromise and over the years, has come to run like a well-oiled machine. Long-time fans of Over Kill will really embrace this record with open arms, as the band has managed to capture that classic sound that made records like "Taking Over" and "The Years Of Decay" so undeniably skullcrushing. New axe-breaker Derek Tailer fits the band like a tight leather glove, melding perfectly with the group's crunching sound. Give the band credit for producing this record on their own, by this time no one knows what Over Kill should sound like more than the band themselves and bassist D.D. Verni definitely left his mark on the knob twiddling, his bludgeoning bass licks have never sounded as deadly. Crisp guitars cut through the mix on "The Mark" like a razor blade and the bluesy breakdown that serves as a bridge in the cut gives this song a powerful dynamic. "Within Your Eyes" shows depth and the fruits of the group's songwriting maturity. The massive intro that ushers in the song leads to a pounding riff which, with the addition of a delayed neck slide create a menacing vibe. When this song kicks in, it's 100% of everything the group's loyal fans have loved about this band for so many years. You'll find the band laying down a thick, layered groove on "Love" and Blitz sounds on top of his game here. The start-stop nature of this song is certain to inspire mosh pits a plenty on the group's summer tour. "Old School" finds NY's finest busting into some raved-up punkish metal that has an awesome sing-along chorus that's just plain fun and full of the kind of fuck you attitude that you would expect from the crew that doesn't care what you say. A fine return to form here from these Brooklyn giants of metal that is sure to satisfy long time fans and up and coming metalheads alike!
