Relentless recording artist Trent Reznor is the man, we all know this and with every release he further proves why he is a crucial part of music today. "Year Zero" takes on a different tone than "With Teeth". Following his pop oriented album Reznor and the NIN crew have taken to a different demeanor with "Year Zero" which is one that sees that pop approach used in a more solemn way.

We have all heard the catch single "Survivalism" which in its own right shows how easy NIN can just grab you by the ears really quick whenever they want and have you putting tracks on repeat. Meanwhile the rest of the album goes on to give you more of that melancholy feel that NIN is so apt to no matter how poppish the songs might come off. Reznor has a way of manipulating music that almost makes it seems that he is putting no effort in at all, and by that I mean he writes these excellent tunes so damn easy. The man has been doing it for his whole life though so that might attribute to the fact that every NIN album we hear is consistently done well. At one point in the album you have a more grooving tune and then the next moment a serious tone takes over and you are left in the dismal light of the music.

There's nothing that can go wrong with NIN as long as Reznor is at the helm and like that is ever going to change. To go back to my previous statement in the beginning of this review, Reznor IS quite an integral part of music today. Being in the mainstream for this long NIN show that you can do what you want to any extent on the creative scale and not be raped by big label. Those who compromise fall at the hands of NIN songs, and those who prosper are rarities, just like NIN.
