On 'Antichrist Superstar', Marilyn Manson exhibit a darker tone than on 'Portrait Of An American Family.' This record seems to be more serious an album, as Manson evolves from a winking ringmaster into a completely hateful entity with the proof being the abrasive, slamming 'Irresponsible Hate Anthem' and the first single, the psychedelically savage 'The Beautiful People.' Manson sounds appropriately wicked on the trance-inducing 'Dried Up, Tied Up And Dead To The World', while 'Tourniquet' melds modern rock sensibilities with Manson's sultry, eerie charisma, resulting in an infectious listen. 'Cryptorchid' finds the group moving into less accessible territory with its deliberately demented harmonies and bizarre outro that provides a purposefully strange twist. Slinking like a fixated serpent, 'Deformography' is a great example of Manson's ability to create music that is at once accessible and offensive, if such a feat is at all a possibility. Massive in scope, the shock opera continues with the trippy, buzzing 'Wormboy.' Listeners will find a highlight in this track, being highly indicative of the utterly original nature of Manson's ultimately evil sonic offerings. A decidedly militant metal bent is applied to 'Angel With The Scabbed Wings', as Manson's assortment of freaks provide an ample backdrop for his freaked-out theatrics. The album's title track is given foundation by a buzzing, doomy riff as Manson articulates his nightmarish lyrics in a drawn-out style that will make your skin crawl. The bitter emotion of 'The Reflecting God' erupts into a furious fit of screaming before lapsing back into minimalist rhythms that back the vocalist's ghoulish presence with a dramatic restraint. Closing out with the strangely soothing 'Man That You Fear', Renzor's gamble paid off big-time, as Manson has most assuredly produced the effort that he was destined to create. With almost as much music as most two disc sets, 'Antichrist Superstar' is well worth the price if you're looking for an album that will simultaneously incite your aggressions and scare the hell out of you as well. How about that back cover? Pretty gross, isn't it? Review by: EF Read Member Reviews |
