What's totally freaking me out right now is the fact that on In This Moment's My Space page it says they are from North Hollywood, CA. That's where I live and have for the past 10 years. I personally never heard of this band until I heard it played on Sirius Satellite Radio's ‘Hard Attack' channel a couple months ago (an extremely kick ass radio channel by the way). It's also totally freaking me out that they formed in 2005, which is when my band (yes your humble reviewer has a band) Foretold Tragedy made our L.A club circuit debut. I guess tragedies are a running theme in North Hollywood these days (that was a joke). I had the opportunity to see In This Moment perform at the Kittie/Walls of Jericho/Dead to Fall/36 Crazy Fists show at the Key Club in Hollywood, CA this past March, and they definitely rocked ass. Though I interviewed the bands Kittie, Walls of Jericho and Dead to Fall at that show, I had a bit of trouble finding the band In This Moment to interview them, and now that I know they are fellow North Hollywood dwellers I really wish I had had the opportunity, maybe next time.
I had to get all of that out before I could even begin to review this album; it's only fair to you, the reader, to know my completely personal interest in this band. Although I will tell you my first impression when I first heard In This Moment before I knew all of the above coincidences: I thought that this band sounded a lot like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, Trivium and the other popular modern metal bands that are out right now. The progressive guitar work, shouted/melodic vocals and alternating soft and hard song sections are very reminiscent of the current new style in metal. I was hoping to god that In This Moment wasn't just a novelty act, the old ‘lets-try-it-with-a-chick-singer' marketing scheme. From reading up on the band via internet I am glad to learn that the members seem to really be fans of the new current in metal music who wanted to deliver their own interpretation of it. Songs like the title track ‘Beautiful Tragedy' definitely deliver that interpretation, with melodic verses and shouted choruses. The band definitely has heart and delivers a damn good performance. Singer Maria is definitely more than a pretty face putting all her strength and emotion into her singing/shouting.
