Detroit's bawdiest, balls-out rowdiest, rocking and rapping longhaired white boy drops a major, badass muthatruckin' bomb with this crucial release that would be the precursor to his multi-platinum 'Devil Without A Cause.' Projecting a street-wizened attitude, the Kid Shows off his cocky attitude more so here than on any other of his releases. Dig the grimy, pure Motown soul of the title track shows young Bob Ritchie biting on a Prince-like groove. Most fans have heard the version on 'The History Of Rock', which is an entirely different recording. No Joe C. in tow here, but plenty of Kid's D-Town cohorts drop in with the young Howling Diablos laying down the D-Funk on 'Detroit Thang', longtime Detroit rapper Esham making an appearance on 'Live' and Rock's protégée/sidekick Uncle Kracker stepping in on the mike on 'Krack Rocks'. The original version of 'Paid' is far funkier and dirty sounding than it's counterpart on The History Of Rock'. Even though this recording is not big budget, it remains professional, with a distinct feeling that puts a lot of old school flavor into songs like 'I Wanna Go Back' This initial recording of 'Ya Keep On' has a much funkier feel than the version that graces 'Devil Without A Cause.' Straight Outta Mt. Clemens, this vibe sails smoother and ultimately bears more of a hip-hop feel. As Rock has progressed through B-Boy, Rapcore and Southern Rock phases in his career, this is the record that really links up the rap and the rock and you can hear where he pulled the funk into more metallic sounds in-between records. 'Shotgun Blast' is bustling, similar to a cross between Led Zeppelin and Beastie Boys, with layers of funk, witty similes and overblown effects that push the track over the top, using a shotgun as an instrument of percussion. 'Classic Rock' truly is classic Kid, with a porno rap that rides along his other tracks like 'Yodeling In The Valley' and ' where he struts his stuff, dishing out a bit of his signature, arrogant gangsta love - 'Got a ho named Sue and one named Pam, fucked them both at the same time, goddamn!.' One of Ritchie's best pimp anthems, 'My Name Is Rock' is a cut that should have made it onto the'Devil Without A Cause' record. It features some of the pimpster's best vocal interplay and is quite typical of the songs he would soon record for his Lava Records debut. This record being the progression that allowed Kid Rock to fuse genres on songs such as 'I Am The Bullgod' and 'Bawitdaba.' 'Where U At Rock' is completely different than it's reworking. It's much darker and you could even go so far as to call it foreboding. There's more than enough material here that is either unreleased or songs that have been since recorded in a different light to make this worthwhile for any serious Kid Rock fan. 'If it's real, you'll feel it.' Right on brother, we're feeling that shit big time. Better check eBay for this gem, it is well worth it.
