Rap-rock trailblazers Hed PE return about 10 years too late with their latest release BACK 2 BASE X, a 13-track release which finds the band trying to reinvent themselves to no avail. While the half-hearted attempt to find their "G-Punk" roots works on tracks like "Beware Do We Go", the majority of this disc seems to be wallowing in an indefinite state of identity crisis. Gone are the irresistible grooves, replaced by a third-rate punk rock flair akin to frat boy rock gone awry. Perhaps the guys are prepping themselves for a return to their roots, but undercooked reggae like "The Chosen One" and dated rap-rock like "White Collars" are not the way to go. Following Limp Bizkit right down the toilet, Hed PE is a band staying alive solely by life support.
