Getting on the Wrapped tour as an unsigned band is a feat within itself, in 2003 the band 2Cents was able to play the Wrapped tour kick off party at the Key club in Hollywood. Wrapped tour head honcho Kevin Lyman liked them so much he put them on the tour that year. This opened up the opportunities that eventually led the band to signing with Atlantic records. The bands first major label release 'Lost at Sea' is a polished and professional display of completely raw and unbridled metal/punk music with influences ranging from AFI and Suicidal Tendencies to Pantera and Slayer.
When one describes a band as blending metal and punk this could actually mean an array of different things. Some might think of As I Lay Dying and some might even think of Slayer. In this case I can best describe 2Cents as sounding like AFI meets Suicidal Tendencies. Both are bands that blend punk and metal in different ways, and 2Cents utilizes that experimental quality in all kinds of different ways. Tracks like 'Fucked in the Afterlife' have that very Suicidal Tendencies sound; a fast punky beat with shredding thrash guitar and a funky bass line. Songs like Track 8, on the other hand, has that more AFI/A7X sound were there is an obvious glam metal influence blended with a dash of punk sensibility. There is even a moving ballad 'A Song for Darrell', and judging by its similarity to 'Cemetery Gates' I'm guess they're referring to Dimebag Darrell. This song is very cool in the way that it abruptly gets heavy for a second and then gets slow and meaningful again.
2cents is a hard working band from Los Angeles, Ca, which is an incredibly hard market to get noticed in considering all the fish in the sea (hmmm that might be what the album title 'Lost at Sea' refers to, write a 500 word essay on the idea and get back to me). 2Cents have managed to stand out in this incredibly dense market because they are innovative and could easily be a crossover act with metal, punk, and maybe even pop kids alike becoming fans of its music. Definitely worth checking out.
