Lacrimas Profundere is a German goth/metal band that has been around since the mid-nineties, but a lot of their catalog was re-mastered and re-released in 2003 and 2004. 'Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts' is the bands latest release in a catalog that boasts over ten releases.

Though at first glance 'Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts'could be thought of as typical Goth rock, especially considering the singer's deep Peter Steele/Danzig style vocals on the opening track 'My Velvet Little Darkness'. Upon further inspection however, you find they actually have a very unique sound. I happen to have a soft spot for Goth rock and guys with deep voices, so I wasn't put off by the opening track as some listeners might have been. Though it does take more than a deep voice to impress me, it takes originality, and after listening to the entire album I was indeed impressed.

Lacrimas Profundere's has blended all that is quintessentially gothic into something very catchy yet heavy. There are elements that remind one of a range of darker bands like The Cult, Depeche Mode, Danzig, My Dying Bride, and Opeth. Like the song 'To Love her on Knees' has a new wave-ish chorus and chunky rock riff verses. While 'No Dear Hearts' opens with a piano, has low, strum-y verses which build up to a piano driven chorus, more in the European, Theatre of Tragedy vein. One of my favorites on the album was 'Not to Say' which has twang-y, eerie guitar, a chugging low bass line, and a catchy new wave-ish chorus, where the singer sings in a higher octave than on some of the other songs. There are actually not that many songs where the singer uses the very low vocals. Songs like 'Short Glance', which is another of my favorites, has higher range, smooth vocals reminding one a bit of My Dying Bride.

If you like any of the bands mentioned in this review you will probably like Lacrimas Profundere, but if you don't like any of those bands then you probably won't like them. I am definitely a converted new fan.
