Trying to work out how bands such as Within Chaos can ever succeed could take a fair while. To give an idea of how dull this record is, just take everything that has been done a million times in straight-forward-fists-in-the-air metal before, put it in a mixer, add a copious amount of emotionless vocals and annoyingly bland musicianship and out comes Virulent, one of the weakest heavy records in a long while.

It starts off well enough (sort of). Imaginatively titled first track ‘In The Beginning' politely shreds away with some interesting time signatures, but from then everything goes drastically downhill. Within Chaos has clearly never heard of the term ‘saturation' because everything here has been done so many times by so many different bands a whole lot better. It could be compared to the new ‘Throwdown' record, in that it seems obvious the band has totally run out of any interesting ideas. Obvious influences can be seen in bands such as Pantera and Killswitch Engage, but that doesn't mean to say they sound anywhere near as good as them. The only saving grace of Virulent is the wonderful production, but even that becomes an annoyance because it sounds way too polished.

Some who like their metal simple and easy listening may like this, but to be brutally honest Virulent is so mind-numbingly dreary that it's almost offensive.
