Coming out of California, Abysmal Dawn is a death metal band with the death metal know how on "From Ashes". The cover suggests your in for a goofy or less vicious ride but you're thinking is too much on the exterior if such thoughts occur. They bring the whole death metal artillery with them; technicality, but not overkill on the form and head banging mid tempos that catch you with a grin when delivered. Abysmal Dawn is one of the few decent death metal acts that have come out of America in the past few years; we could note the notables but let's focus on an act unfamiliar to most.
With an intro flowing with the same melody thrown around in different ways, the second track has the band kicking in with instant ear titillation. Good American death metal is still alive and here is a fine example of it. Abysmal Dawn is clearly not some half ass act that takes the mere basics of death metal and reuses the formula. Instead, their technical know how lends an interesting hand that broadens the musical composition to make sure that everything is satisfactory. Think of the better aspects of the way death metal is played without the same old you can just catch on any Cannibal Corpse album. This band isn't going to blow your mind, that's not their intent either, but they will be added to your list of well rounded DM acts.
"From Ashes" is a solid listen; it's simply good death metal, which as most have it, consists of excellent musicians who have learned well from predecessors.
