A different side of ex The Crown members, Angel Blake is a new project that takes on a different form than the previous effort of the thrash/death legends. The self titled debut from the band marks a different direction altogether.

More so on the gradual heavy rock side, Angel Blake takes on the approach of a rockier sound. This shift in styles might not appeal too many who are engrossed in the expectation of another band that bears close resemblance to the previous known act. Instead, fans of such heavy music might leave and a different breed might come into liking Angel Blake. The album is neither extremely melodic nor metal, but playing with both realms, the sound teeters on the edge of Amorphis or Katatonia only with a more straightforward sound.

It takes a few tracks in to find the ways in which this album can be accessed and enjoyed but they are there. Repetition might be a required patience with this one as the focus on simpler forms of song writing can be heard. More of a conventional sound, the album offers listeners an emotional release only with a different energy. They are heavier; rather they have their heavier moments which once again are written for the purpose of the challenge of a different style of song writing.

The album definitely has a brighter tone to it amongst the melancholy areas which brings about the rock vibe. A release you should definitely lend an ear to, but don't be surprised when you find it not to be your cup of tea.

While recording Smashing Pumpkins' "Crush," producer Butch Vig told Billy Corgan he'd have to take off his jewellery for the guitar solo. Instead he kept it on, and the percussive effect audible in the background is the jewelry playing loosely in time with Billy's wrist as he strums.
