Hacavitz encompasses all things Mexican death metal. The group consists of former and current members of some of Mexico's most renowned death metal acts including Cenotaph, Disgorge, Demonized and Ravager. The lyrical themes, artwork, and above all, the music all uphold the bloodthirsty superstitions and religious practices of the group's ancestors, the Aztecs. The album's opening track 'Nighwinds' features tribal drums and wind instruments, the sound of raging winds, and faint eerie voices. This intro sets the mood for overwhelming fast Morbid Angel-inspired death metal. Vocalist, Antimo Buonnaro does a great rendition of David Vincent on 'Blessed Are the Sick' when his vocals echo for a split second before screeching more incantations.
The next track 'Ultimate Covenant' shows these banditos further pushing the boundaries of speed and complexity. Buonnaro and Eduardo Guevara pick their guitars at a rate few can match, alternating between open and close chords, which create a snake-like rhythm. The amount of practice these four have committed themselves to is apparent on 'Lusting the Dead ov Night.' Drummer, Oscar Garcia carefully follows the two guitarists switching between rapid string bends and automatic-rifle-firing speed licks.
'Venganza' is an album of the blackest presence. Keyboards filter into the background through a few places in the album, adding the slightest sensation of oncoming malevolent forces. Throaty death vocals placed somewhat low in the mix add another dimension to this mountain of madness. Demonic voices and terrifying noises provide an outro and, in some places, an intro to each track. The outro to 'Old Rancor' is the band at its most horrific moment. Several malefic voices echo from speaker to speaker, enshrouding the listening in a nightmare sound scape.
Fans who have followed the Mexican death metal scene for sometime know its potency. The Chasm and Cenotaph made appearances at the Milwaukee Metalfest, and provided what may have been U.S. fans' first glimpse of what lay below the border. The Chasm has moved to America, and members of Cenotaph have joined Hacavitz in founding a home with the American label, Moribund. With a band like Hacavitz, expect this scene to explode.
