The Autumn Offering have used up their last lifeline on Victory Records. Their latest and last offering on the label, “Requiem,” provides old time fans with very wrong vocal and stylistic changes that turn their decent metalcore sound into a more commercial satisfying generic melodic metalcore . Although new fans might be more attracted to this style (similar to the change Avenged Sevenfold did from their debut to their sophomore album), this change turns out negatively for the talented and skillful band.
What was a decent outing for their previous album, 2007s "Fear Will Cast No Shadow,” this new release sparks a different flame altogether. Producer Mark Lewis did a generic job putting the finishing touches on this album. The sound is much louder but the production doesn’t sound clean at all. It actually put the vocals louder then everything else and much of the album sounds very melodic with a more whining sound and less of a singing clarity, something that was highly regarded on their previous album. The riffs sound great initially, but taking a closer listen, the later of the songs don’t really emphasize much variety in terms of riff style and approach. This isn’t an album old time fans will listen to completely. The guitars sound a bit like there is too much bass going on that interferes with the clean production AO is trying to pull off.
The songwriting is good but there is too much bogging down this album to be a completely pleasant listen. Many of the songs sound similar and there isn’t much to pin our ears down. This album also falls short on duration lasting only a little longer than 37 minutes in its entirety. This proves that the band should have done a better job transforming themselves and upping the ante when their contract was up. Unfortunately, this album shows that the effort done by this talented group isn’t there as it should be. This makes their previous effort look like a masterpiece.
