Envision a musical formula so involved and complex that few would dare to even attempt the feat. Then try picturing attacking the formula with a twelve-minute Opeth-style epic minus the slow progressive interludes. What you are currently picturing is exactly what Virginia death-metallers Arsis have managed to accomplish - an EP focused around one highly intricate, intense, and long song, "A Diamond for Disease." The EP itself shares the song's name, and also contains two other tracks.

"A Diamond for a Disease" is a highly innovative song and Arsis have done something that really hasn't been attempted before. Very few songs over ten minutes exist in the style of melodic death metal that they play, and those that do often have a sort of recycled sound to them, with one huge exception being Opeth (but they approach things very differently than Arsis). Vocalist/guitarist James Malone provides both demonic growls and shredding riffs, while drummer Michael Van Dyne takes care of the blastbeats. The pair manage to keep things very interesting during the twelve-minute epic, and never lose the feeling of originality that the listener will initially pick up.

The EP's other two tracks, "Roses on White Lace" and "The Promise of Never" are both solid, and served in the same fashion as the first track, minus the length. However, the title track clearly steals the show here as a song that will probably be remembered as a very important one in death metal's history. Extreme metal listeners everywhere from the shores of Lake Bodom to those of south Florida should find something very appealing in this mini-CD.
