The O.C.'s Eighteen Visions manage to glide near the more commercial side of the metalcore pack on their latest 'Obsession', much of their material coming off simply as very solid modern rock. Opener 'Obsession' immediately pleases with its sledgehammer virulence. 'I Let Go' is an infectiously catchy tune that is a speedy cut and paste to the brain. Its addictive hook takes the track to a higher level, jettisoning the bands brash yet tuneful nature into the stratosphere. 'Crushed' incorporates a lot of influence from the metal giants of the late eighties and early nineties, compacting those influences into a tight, neatly arranged package. Through the course of 'Obsession', you'll find 18V blurring the lines between metal and punk, sounding like an amped up Motley Crue at times, others harmonizing as well as the best of Incubus' material.
Mudrock (A7X, Godsmack), as always, shows that he is a master of the mix, bringing out the best qualities in this talented band with a state of the art production effort. Tower Of Snakes is bursting with anguish, another example of this group's ability to succeed with different feels, ultimately with a synonymous success. 'I Should Tell You' illustrates the less aggro side of the group, emphasizing the group's sense of melody and showing that they can create music with plenty of emotional impact without turning it up to eleven. 'Bleed By Yourself' kicks off with a riff that would make Entombed proud, while James Hart offers a Weilandesque performance. 'A Long Way Home' is forward thrusting and packed with attitude. Its chorus is yet another memorable line, offering balance in consideration of this tracks dirty, ballsy riffing. Eighteen Visions are a group that makes killer music that keeps you coming back for more and 'Obsession' delivers top quality listening enjoyment on every level, making this an essential, crucial and brilliant collection of highly talented and driven performances.
