Job For A Cowboy has been busy developing one of the largest extreme metal buzzes around and their all-new 6-song EP proves exactly why their name has been hot upon the tongues of metalheads as of late. Crushing death metal meets modern metal variety on tunes like 'Catharsis For The Buried', a track incorporates the guttural belches and pig-squealing vocals of vocalist Jonny in a brutal flux with the band's disjointed, dirging and chugging.
On the hammering 'Entombment Of A Machine' buzzing cross-picking and lethargic bass thumps accompany complex, well thought out drum patterns as Elliot picks apart his drum kit like a bad argument, finding enough holes in the rhythms to include swift rolls and shape-shifting, jackhammer beats that give the band's output a boisterous feeling. Yes, the sound of JFAC is brutally harsh, but the band employs plenty of dynamics to sufficiently adjust those critics who cry for musicianship.
Whether locked in slushy, grinding death mode, as on 'Relinquished' or adding a moshpit-friendly stomp during 'Knee Deep', Job For A Cowboy never cease to push the boundaries of extreme music, while remaining extremely listenable due to a punchy, rumbling thunderhead of a mix. 'Suspended By The Throat' conjures images of flying elbows through a moshpits herd, as Job For A Cowboy will surely round up the metalheads live with the mixture of Andrew and Ravi's vehement riffing and Jonny's sick, disturbed growling. On this track, you'll find the singer's most rabid feat of the entire record, alternating between vocal styles effortlessly while never letting up on the severe fierceness of his delivery.
Although it is rare for an EP to warrant such a high rating, the originality in the performance of JFCA on 'Doom' and the aggressive emotion inherent in said performance deserves critical praise, with this Arizona-based group appearing as one of extreme metal's brightest hopefuls. An appropriately brutal introduction to a most talented bunch of skull-bashers, 'Doom' delivers a comprehensive sonic battering that's a highly recommended extreme music experience.
