Is Edsel Dope the younger brother of Al Jourgensen? That's the feeling that you get from Dope's latest, 'American Apathy.' An American flag on the cover, industrial-strength metal and a low rooted distaste for George Bush are the most obvious similarities. But Dope are still not a carbon copy, Edsel's vocals are much clearer and upfront, (relying more on hook-laden lyrics) and the band show that they can explore a more diverse palette of musical stylization from track to track. The one-two punch of 'I'm Back' and 'Survive' will have listeners reeling; while the latter's controlled chaos is easily both catchy and commercial enough to get mucho spins all up and down the FM dial.

In all actuality, there's not a weak spot to be found on this album. Even mid-tempo grinders such as 'No Way Out' and 'Sex Machine' (Which sounds like a mashing of Motley Crue, Powerman 5000 and Ministry) are fresh enough to be wildly entertaining. You'll find Edsel sounding even more like Fred Durst than Durst does on 'Always', although it's odd to find one of the best Limp Bizkit songs that the band never wrote on a Dope record.

If the electro-porno groove 'Let's Fuck' doesn't dominate clubs around the world, it will be a big surprise. This song has a pulsating, memorable rhythm and extremely suggestive lyrics that are certain to raise more than a few eyebrows. Speaking of that subject, 'Fuck The World' succeeds as a cyber-metal lashing, while the band's retexturing of N.W.A's 'Fuck The Police' is the best version yet from this group.

More so than any other track on the record, 'I Wish I Was The President' displays Edsels knack for making and relaying some of the best double entendre, street rat lyrics going. A second cover rendition, this time of Depeche Mode's 'People Are People' finds Dope performing way out of character, yet astoundingly well. Definitely check this tune out – it's intriguing to say the least. Suprisingly, one of the best cuts on the album, 'Dream' is a bit buried, but 'American Apathy' is not the type of record that will having you pushing the next button anyway. This one's best when listened to all the way through.

When they reach down deep into their bag, Dope sure can pull out a lot of smokin' tricks. Make sure you get your fix.
