'Ritual' contains some pretty rough production, even for a blackmetal record, and it's very noticeable from the first note of the record that there are some serious mixing issues that need to be addressed here. Although black metal is intended to be a raw and primal form of music, it is still necessary to perform the proper knob twisting so that it may have the proper amount of ferocity.
The songs that Velonnic Sin have worked out here are for the most part mildly interesting. There's a great amount of potential in what they are doing, but further refinement would likely attract a wider amount of listeners. Even so, the songs here do retain a bit of value and as the record progresses, the production becomes less of an issue. On the varied title track, the band gets inventive, incorporating a flanged, clean passage on guitar before erupting into total musical annihilation.
Velinnos is essentially the one man black metal show as is so trendy. This is a downside because it's almost never that these types of acts perform live. A great many people that purchase albums actually enjoy the idea that the record is something that can be duplicated before the eyes. Even still, the bleak, war-sworn soldier of Satan does the types of things here that underground purists love. It would be most intriguing to hear these cuts remixed and remastered, it is pretty likely that this album could be considered a good one with stronger production. Guitar-wise the talent is there and the vocals are as bleak as any. A blasting wind of treble trills and unholy sensations comprise the bulk of the record. Quite inventive and true to a harsh, necro sound, Velonic Sin is a great album for the true black metal fan or underground tape trader sort that feasts on this type of matter. Those enchanted with more commercialized forms of the genre had best steer clear. This is definitely not for you.
