Although American metal devotees may at first find the band's moniker to be a bit odd, Custard prove on 'Wheels Of Time' that they're a band that's anything but soft. Power metal mavens will revel in this group's starkly impressive musicianship, be it Guido Brieke's powerful set of pipes, the slick axe showmanship of Holger Simon and Karsten Knuppel or the precise, dynamic rhythms of bassist Jens Schroder and drummer Chris Klapper.

Largely, 'Wheels Of Time' is German metal ala Helloween done right with choice cuts such as the driving title track and consciously relevant and extraordinarily melodic 'One Step Too Far' being blueprints for creating metal that is majestically harmonic and immediately ear-catching. Brieke puts forth a stellar performance on 'Escape Reality', a track that allows the singer to show off his impressive vocal control. Beginning with a layered guitar melody that recalls 'Ride The Lightning' era Metallica, 'Shine On' stands as further evidence of the band's masterful songwriting, as the band balances power and melody in expert fashion.

There can be no denying that Custard are extremely talented artists and as 'Wheels Of Time' rolls along, you'll not find a single weak song in the bunch. All the while, the band pulls off the feat of operating in a familiar style without sounding stale. As 'Fade Out' closes this highly noteworthy release in an intensely dramatic fashion, it becomes evident that Custard must be considered as a prominent force to be reckoned with in the realm of heavy metal.

Pantera's 'Mouth for War' was the first single to ever debut at No. 1 on the metal chart.
