Nell of Theatre Of Tragedy has an unmistakable recorded presence which is brought to the forefront here on this collection of poppy melodies. The percussive elements contained in the soulful, smooth sound of 'Silent' lend an almost New Wave sensibility to a track that is best described as gothic pop. Despite the gloomy nature of the lyrical content, this music is still much closer to Madonna than Megadeth as The Crest embark upon a highly melodic, soft metal competition with Leaves' Eyes for the Sugar Witch crown, employing many of the same techniques you will find in Liv Kristine's vocal performances and ironically, singing over very similar song structures. 'Another Life' is a winner, with a blissfully harmonious chorus section and an engaging familiarity that makes this track quite memorable. Nell's soothing voice shines on the opening 'Run Like Blazes', one of the most guitar intensive tracks of the record. Shimmering with sonic brilliance, 'New Profound Fear' offers a mysterious ambience as the group treads onward into softer sonic territory, nevertheless making a profound impact with the low key chord shifting and the subtle whispers voiced by Nell. If what you seek is a female fronted group that is along the lines of Evanescence, you won't find that here, as most of the material on 'Vain City Chronicles' is much mellower that the Amy Lee fronted ensemble. Still, The Crest have very much to offer listeners with their dreamy, pop infected, highly memorable sound.
