Sonically, Jacobs Dream falls into the same realm as bands such as Queensryche and Fates Warning, imparting a majestic stature that is furthered by the commanding vocal presence of Chaz Bond, the band's singer. Often the music is one kick drum away from being full on power metal, the traditional axe attack of John Berry and Jon Noble providing substantial amounts of eloquently imparted metal based in the teachings of the traditional metal giants and accepting classical nods ala Malmsteen. All the while, Jacobs Dream have a knack for creating driving metal that gallops along toward kingdoms afar. Well written lyrics enhance the value of this recording, giving these tracks an intelligent appeal while remaining substantially powerful in their own right. During 'Spinning Leaf', the listener will hear evidence of a slight Trouble influence. Perhaps, this is mere coincidence, but the track is powered by a weighty vibe nonetheless. While the hand of doom does seem to have placed its touch upon the music of Jacobs Dream, their straightforward delivery and competent arrangements retains the dramatic qualities of classic Dio during moments during the album that certainly are convincing when considering the band's overall impact. Sound-wise, the rhythm guitars can be a bit muddy at times, but this aspect adds to the foreboding nature of tracks like 'Tempest', with clean guitars providing an ample counterbalance to the more insidious sounding riffing. If you're a fan of the more progressive side of traditional heavy metal, this is a release that you're likely to enjoy. Although not a great deal of new ground is broken, 'Drama Of The Ages' remains a strong effort that shows Jacobs Dream to be a band with a fair measure of skill and an ear for creating mighty melodies that are for the most part, very enjoyable. Those that delve more deeply into this album will find it to be an album that grows on you with each successive listen, making this a solid addition to any progressive/ power metal collection.
