Power metal mode on. Dragonforce are back with their first new album since the completely unexpected popularity explosion that was 2006's "Inhuman Rampage." With an eager throng of young Guitar Hero-playing nerds awaiting (myself being included in that consortium) Dragonforce have unleashed exactly what they needed to unleash. That being, of course, an album that sounds just like the last one.

Dragonforce are fast power metal. Period. That's it. Soaring vocals and lightning-fast guitar piled on top of a driving drum n' bass rhythm section. That's what Dragonforce do, and they do it well. Still, it can't help but lose its luster after the 4 billionth time you've heard it. Fans will love this album, but those looking for a more diverse and unpredictable experience will not.

I wouldn't dream of giving this album a negative review for the simple fact that the musicianship is awe-inspiring. Herman Li is a certified guitar god. Had this been Dragonforce's first album, I would probably be telling everyone to look out for this band, but as it is everyone already knows about them and what they do. It seems as if it is only a matter of time before both the Guitar Hero and Dragonforce fads wear out and kids are onto the next thing. For now, pick this one up for some casual entertainment (and a guitar lesson for the truly adventurous) but don't expect it to sustain you for long.
