Gaias Pendulum is a Goth Metal band from Medellin, Columbia. Most Goth metal bands that are well known (or at least well known to metal heads) come out of Europe. Gaias Pendulum's latest release, 'Scarlet Visions' has a European feel to it. The band was originally formed in 1995 as AFLICCI and went through several variations to become Gaias Pendulum in the late 1990's. The band has a deep spiritual and philosophical message regarding man's place in nature, 'Gaia' being the Greek Mythical character that was the Goddess or mother of the earth.

'Scarlet Visions' is an album that exemplifies the "Violet Gothic" style (as the band themselves calls it). It is a mix of haunting classical melodies and catchy, heavy rock rhythmus reminiscent of My Dying Bride and Theatre of Tragedy. Smooth, deep bass vocals make it distinctively gothic in the tradition of Bauhaus. Although there are a lot of black metal elements that can be heard hear as well; the big, epic guitar melodies and intense piano over the heavy drums reminds the listener of bands like Hypocrisy and Agathodaimon, and there's even some death metal growling. An example of this can be heard on the opening track 'Awake in Black'.

But overall the album is on the slower, melodic side and less on the assaulting, blast beat side. There is a heavy influence from the greats like Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden in the true tradition of big, theatrical rock n' roll. Trippy, moody break downs can be heard in songs like 'Santo Grial' and 'Light in my Eyes' that just ooze 'Pink Floyd-The Wall'. Any fan of theatrical, dramatic rock music, will love this album and keep it in heavy rotation in there CD player.

    Hardcore Annal Sects

As Nirvana's Nevermind album was breaking nationally, the group was invited to appear on MTV's Saturday night heavy metal show Headbanger's Ball. Pretending to take the show's title literally, Kurt Cobain went on the air dressed in a ruffly pink ball gown
