There's no doubt about it – HIMSA is one brutal fucking beast of a band. As evidenced on their heavy-as-a-daisy cutter new effort 'Hail Horror', HIMSA transcends the bullshit and gets straight down to business with a prevailing attitude that forecasts nothing short utter sonic annihilation. The group proved on the recent 'Blackest Of The Black' tour that they have evolved into an even more powerful live entity and with the focus of the band's next blistering live set on the tracks that grace 'Hail Horror, fans are in for an even more powerful blast of live thunder from this crushingly heavy unit.
Production by Tue Madsen makes all the difference on this album as the skilled knob-twister lends his gifted ear for all that is heavy and as a result, captures the sheer, relentless fury inherent in the group's songwriting and performance. Comparisons to other Madsen-produced artists like The Haunted will undeniably crop up, but HIMSA take their music a step further, interlacing jagged Pantera influenced riffing with remarkably intense hardcore dramatics. The whipping, mosh-inciting frenzy manifested in the track 'The Destroyer' lays everything on the line and shows you what this band is truly made of – 100% unapologetic heaviness. One particular synonym for heaviness is substance and there is plenty of that to be found on this dark, churning masterpiece as well.
'Sleezevil' arrives as an anger-riddled, voluminous sonic fist to the face. On- target, precision guided licks give way to a monstrous breakdown that will please fans of Throwdown and Exhorder equally. The gruff, all-out aggression espoused by frontman John Pettibone is unrelenting as the album progresses with the singer delivering every last bit of rage he can possibly muster. It is this vicious tone that so perfectly matches the sound of the band's wicked backdrop of overwhelming force and there is little denying that the abrasive presence exhibited by Pettibone is the virtual heart and soul of HIMSA.
An album that lives up to expectations and then some, 'Hail Horror' is one of the most solid slabs of steel since the invention of the anvil. Drop this disc from the window and you'll leave a crater six feet deep. 'Hail Horror' is that damn heavy.
