Vying for their stab at godlike status with 'Undoing Ruin', Darkest Hour show themselves to be a group with a legitimate claim to one of the most well put together and thought out metal albums of 2005. Eleven jams that have already passed the Devy skullet-bang test comprise an album that is richly focused, harshly aggressive and at the very same time, fiercely melodic. Darkest Hour, with the help of producer Townsend, have achieved a refined attack that places a severe emphasis on dramatic tonal paradigm shifts. The end result is potently weighty grooves and snapping rhythms as 'This Will Outlive Us' erupts in a flurry, this cut standing as one of the most stunning of the batch. Intentionally placed harmonies as well as decidedly comprehensible vocal melodies are scattered throughout the mid-tempoed 'Convalescence', but it's in the thrust of tracks like scorching opener 'With A Thousand Words To Say But One' that you fill find the true metal heart of Darkest Hour. A lot of hype has been placed in front of this album and tracks such as the unruly 'District Divided' or the mosh-ready 'Low' easily support it. Townsend was born to produce this type of music and by placing his ear inside a studio with a band such as Darkest Hour, who have finally hit their stride, is an unequivocally undisputable combination of talent. Album of the decade? Nah. Is this one of the most engagingly enjoyable metal albums of it's kind in 2005? Most assuredly.
