Nocturne plays low grooving material emphasized by the vocals of Lacey Conner, who sings with a pop sensibility on 'Guide To Extinction'. The cover art may lead one to believe that Nocturne is a heavier band than they actually are. For the most part, the band puts out middle of the road pop metal with a small industrial influence. The band tries their hand at a big rock sound on 'Shallow' that is both accessible and memorable. 'I Lie' comes off more as straight up pop, while 'Alibi' goes for an approach with more of a gothic emphasis. The lyrics are xenophobic, antisocial and overtly dark, making the message much heavier than the actual music. Imagine melding Madonna and Ministry. If Madonna had her way it would likely sound much more like her pop dance styling than the abrasive, gritty cyber metal delivered by Al Jourgensen and pals. For the most part on this record, it's all Madonna. The band tries their hand at modern rock on 'Indulge' and comes up just this side of Garbage. One of the heavier spots you'll find on the record in the seething 'Dirty Sanchez', where Nocturne come up with their dirtiest sound on the record, mostly due to the distortion effect which filters Conner's vocals. The listener will hear Patti Smith inspired ranting on the electro track 'No Way Out', where Conner mixes sultry, seductive crooning and distant, hollow growls. 'Cocaine Sex' may see some spins by club DJs, due to its obvious topical matter and a distinct club sound throughout the tripped out track that lends itself more to dancing than moshing. Adventurous listeners will likely find something of interest here, as 'Guide To Extinction' has quite a bit to offer, but keep in mind that the ratio of pop to metal here is about 3 to 1.
