“Stuck Here On Snake's Way” shows just how much Omnium Gatherum has progressed over the course of its career. Branching out in several directions, the band has broken the mold of stereotypes and became an entity unto itself, exploring avenues of experimentation that most death metal bands fear to tread.
As this album's most stark example of the band's continued growth, “Just Signs,” with its polyrhythmic, trance-like introduction brings the accessible into harmony with aggression. It's here that Omnium Gatherum has achieved a perfect balance of beast and beauty Fluttering, shimmering guitars compliment smooth yet mournful vocal harmonies leading to a weighty chorus wonderfully accented with deathly growls.
Comparisons to Opeth and even My Dying Bride are inescapable, but these references are merely referential, not definitive. “A Part Of God” seethes with low-end Swedish guitar growls but then transcends into a fluttering bridge before the muscalr primary theme returns and Omnium Gatherum accomplish these chameleon-like shifts with ease. Trained ears will uncover “Clandestine”-era Entombed inspiration, Katatonia-like art-doom and the types of melodic substructures that propelled the entire Gothenburg scene to dominance, but in all actuality, Omnium Gatherum has now stepped into a highly original, unclassifiable realm.
Most often heavy as an elephantitis-like anvil, often brilliant with flickering melody and always top-notch in performance “Stuck On Snakes Way” shines as it brutalizes, putting Omnium Gatherum at the forefront of its craft.
