The Gauntlet: Advice Column

Jessica Vale Responds

Jessica Vale

Influenced by the urban chaos that makes New York what it is, Jessica Vale's industrial-pop-goth inflected sound captures the essence of city. "The base sound level in New York is significantly higher than anywhere else in the world, so it takes much more intense music to feel like one is making a statement," she says.

How, in your opinion, do Goths represent an artistic form of yearning?

There is no goth scene anymore, so I have no clue. Prozac probably killed it. In fact anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and ADD drugs have probably killed all good art/music scenes.

My band recently signed a record contract. I play bass for the band and it became clear after we signed the contract that our biggest supporter at the label wants me to sleep with him. He made comments to the effect that the label might not push us if I don't. My band has been working hard for 6 years to get this far and I don't want to let the band down. What should I do

A few years ago I had meeting with the president of a well known music corporation. After the meeting he made a blatant, vulgar pass at me and implied that if we could get "closer" maybe we could talk more business. I changed my entire game plan in music after that. Do you really want your music being pushed by someone who does that to their artists? Besides, you don't need a label these days. Spit in his face and move on. Seriously.

I'm 16 and my girlfriend just turned 17 and I got her pregnant. How do I tell my parents?

Are your parents cool? Strictly religious? It's hard to give advice without knowing that. Either way you should tell them sooner rather than later. If you're really afraid of them maybe you could leave a letter and go out for a few hours. That way they can cool off by the time you get home.

Do you have a good recipe for turkey chili?

My cooking skills stop when things no longer have instructions. Sad, but true.

What are your thoughts on illegal music downloading?

My last album was available on all the torrent sites 3 months before it came out. It was a little heartbreaking. I had fans writing me about how great it was, having no clue that it wasn't even out yet. This chick at my label would write them back and just ask that they at least promote the crap out of it.
I think it's the hardest on indie artists who have no money. They deserve that few dollars they'd get if it was actually bought because it might be the only way they ever put out more music.

Hasn't the goth image run it's course, are you afraid an image that seems to be dying out will hurt your fanbase as more and more are turn off to this style?

Goth is dead, but so is punk, metal, glam, emo, electronic...it's all been worn out. What's left of the goth scene is 100% electronic these days. It's a karaoke fest. We played a so-called goth festival a few weeks ago and were the only band with real drums and bass, out of about 20. The sound guy had no clue what to do about it, and I will never ever get on stage with just a laptop. That said, we are hardly a goth band. We're a rock band.

My girlfriend wants me to be more romantic. I really like this girl and don't want to blow it by being too cheesy. What should I do to convince her I have a romantic side?

Go out and buy her random little things that show her you were thinking about her, and that you know her interests. That's romantic. Pick her up a dvd, or video game. Something she's in to. Just don't go the candy and teddy bear route. That's cheesy and takes no effort. And tell her she's beautiful or gorgeous a lot. Those words go a long way.

What do people see in emo music? I just don't get it.

Lucky for you, you can listen to whatever you want and no one will care.

I am 17 and a lesbian. How do I tell my parents who are catholic and quite religious. I have put this off for 3 years.

Do you need to tell them now? If i were you I would move out when you turn 18, in a very friendly way, and then start your own life. Tell them once you are not at their mercy 24/7. You'll probably be absolutely miserable otherwise.

What is jenkem? Have you ever tried it?

Ummm, no. I would pretty much do anything else on the planet before i took a shit in a bag, let it rot, and then got high off it. But let me know how it goes!
